Ghana has established Africa's first national carbon market, creating a framework for trading carbon credits. The initiative, launched by the Environmental Protection Agency, positions Ghana as a leader in climate finance.
The Ghana Carbon Registry will:
- Issue carbon credits for emission reduction projects
- Facilitate trading of credits internationally
- Attract climate finance to Ghana
- Support Ghana's NDC implementation
Initial projects registered include:
- Afforestation in the Brong Ahafo Region
- Renewable energy projects in the Northern Region
- Energy efficiency improvements in industries
- Clean cooking programs in rural areas
