The Ghana Basketball Federation has approved an expansion of the national basketball league from 8 to 12 teams, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport in Ghana.
The expanded league will feature:
- Teams from all 16 regions
- Home and away format
- Improved officiating standards
- Live television coverage
- Better player compensation
New teams added:
- Tamale Kings
- Sunyani Royals
- Koforidua Warriors
- Ho Capitals
The expansion is supported by a sponsorship deal with a telecommunications company worth GHS 2 million over three years. The sponsorship will cover team travel, equipment, and prize money.
The league has produced several players who have gone on to play professionally in Europe and the US, including current NCAA Division I players. The federation aims to make Ghana a basketball powerhouse in West Africa.
