Ghana Fights Neglected Tropical Diseases

Ghana has conducted a successful mass drug administration campaign reaching 5 million people with treatment for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

Diseases targeted:
- Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis)
- Onchocerciasis (river blindness)
- Soil-transmitted helminths (intestinal worms)
- Schistosomiasis
- Trachoma

Campaign results:
- 5 million people treated
- 90% coverage in endemic districts
- 20,000 community drug distributors trained
- 8 regions covered

The Ghana Health Service, working with partners including the WHO and END Fund, conducted the campaign through community-based distribution.

NTDs affect over 10 million Ghanaians, causing disability, reduced productivity, and social stigma. Mass drug administration is a key strategy for elimination.

Ghana is on track to eliminate lymphatic filariasis and trachoma by 2025, and has already eliminated guinea worm disease.
