Online scams are on the rise across Africa as cybercriminals exploit mobile money platforms, social media, and messaging apps to steal from unsuspecting victims.
In Ghana and other African countries, scammers are circulating fake links promising free internet bundles, gifts, discounted data packages, or lottery winnings. Once users click these links, they are asked to enter personal details, verification codes, or Mobile Money (MoMo) PINs.
Cybersecurity experts warn that no legitimate telecom company or financial institution will ever ask customers to share their PINs or one-time passwords. Yet many victims fall for these tricks due to economic pressure and lack of digital awareness.
Authorities report that millions of cedis have been lost to MoMo fraud in recent months. In some cases, victims only realize they have been scammed after their entire wallet balance has been wiped out.
Experts advise users to avoid clicking unknown links, verify promotions through official channels, enable two-factor authentication, and report suspicious activity immediately.
As digital platforms continue to grow, public education and vigilance remain the strongest tools against online fraud.
