Ghana and China have signed a landmark $2 billion infrastructure deal that will transform key sectors of Ghana's economy. The agreement, signed at the Jubilee House, includes funding for roads, housing, energy, and digital infrastructure projects across all 16 regions.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana praised the strong bilateral relations, noting that this partnership exemplifies South-South cooperation. Ghana's President emphasized that the deal includes technology transfer and local content requirements to ensure maximum benefit for Ghanaians.
Key projects include:
- 50,000 affordable housing units
- Upgrade of the Accra-Kumasi highway
- Expansion of Tema Port
- Rural electrification in northern Ghana
- Digital infrastructure for smart cities
The opposition has raised concerns about debt sustainability, but government officials assure that the terms are favorable and include extended repayment periods.
Parliament will need to ratify the agreement before implementation begins. Civil society groups have called for transparency in the procurement process.
