The Government of Ghana has launched a rural broadband initiative aimed at providing internet access to underserved communities. The initiative, a partnership between government and telecommunications companies, will deploy 2,000km of fiber optic cable.
Key components of the initiative:
- Fiber optic infrastructure to 500 rural communities
- Public Wi-Fi hotspots in community centers
- Subsidized data packages for rural users
- Digital literacy training programs
- Support for rural businesses to go online
The Ministry of Communications is leading the initiative, with funding from the Universal Service Fund. The project aims to achieve 80% internet coverage by 2025, up from the current 58%.
