Ghana Launches National Health Insurance Scheme Review

The Government of Ghana has launched a comprehensive review of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to improve coverage and sustainability.

Key areas under review:
- Expanding the benefit package
- Improving claims processing
- Increasing the provider network
- Enhancing fraud detection
- Mobile-based membership and renewal

Current NHIS statistics:
- 12 million active members (40% of population)
- 4,500 accredited healthcare providers
- GHS 2.5 billion annual claims

The review committee includes health experts, insurance professionals, civil society representatives, and international partners. They are expected to submit recommendations within 6 months.

The Minister of Health noted that while the NHIS has achieved significant coverage since its launch, challenges remain in ensuring financial sustainability and comprehensive care for all members.
