The University of Cape Coast has launched a medical school, becoming the fifth public medical school in Ghana. The school will train doctors to address the critical shortage of physicians in the country.
Program details:
- 100 students per year
- 6-year program (MB ChB)
- Modern facilities and equipment
- Teaching hospital affiliation
- Focus on primary healthcare
Ghana currently has:
- 15,000 doctors (ratio 1:2,000 population)
- WHO recommends 1:1,000
- Shortage of 15,000 doctors
The new medical school is part of efforts to:
- Increase doctor training capacity
- Improve healthcare in Central Region
- Reduce dependence on foreign-trained doctors
- Support universal health coverage goals
The school has partnered with medical schools in the US and UK for faculty exchanges and research collaboration. The first cohort of students will begin classes in September 2024.
